WHY ARE GIRLS ASHAMED OF MENSTRUATION?

This was a question on my mind when I returned from yesterday's school presentation. We collaborated with the founder of Rubies and Royalty foundation Dr. Lizzy Inoh to educate girls about menstruation and menstrual hygiene.

After the lecture, we donated sanitary pads to the girls, to my greatest surprise when we needed to take pictures the girls hid their menstrual pads in their bags. when I asked why they told me the boys were looking at them. hmm!

QUESTION?

When did menstruation become a thing of shame and reproach?
How did our girls get here?
Parents, how often do you educate your children about their bodies, body safety, and puberty?

These are questions every parent should answer as we mark the World's MENSTRUAL HYGIENE Day this year.

In my days all my age mate had their menstruation before me so I started praying that God should send mind. Sometimes I will purposely use a pad in the expectation that before I wake up in the morning my menstruation will show, but  I usually woke up with disappointment.

So when my menstruation finally appeared I was overjoyed because I could relate to others who saw theirs before me.

WORLD MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY " 28TH MAY"

World Menstrual Hygiene Day was initiated as a world day on May 28, 2014, by a German NGO named "Wash United". May which is the 5th month of the year was chosen to represent the 5 days average menstruation period for most women and the day 28th chosen to represent the average menstrual cycle of most women.

This day is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of good menstrual hygiene management worldwide and changing the social stigma associated with menstruation.

Puberty brings menstruation, breast development, and hair growth in the pubic area and armpit. It is a period where a child becomes sexually mature for reproduction and this is God-given.

There is nothing to be ashamed of, it is a natural and healthy process for girls and women of reproductive age. Ironically what our girls are ashamed of is what married women who stop menstruating early when they haven't even gotten a child will worry and pray about.

TIPS FOR GOOD MENSTRUAL HYGIENE

  1. Proper hand washing before and after changing menstrual materials.
  2. Change menstrual materials every 4 to 6 hours.
  3. Take your bath at least twice a day to keep the pubic area clean.
  4. Remove menstrual materials through the back to prevent introducing infection from the anus to the vagina.
  5.  Dispose of used pads safely by folding the used pads and wrapping it with a cover of the new one then discard properly.
  6. Stay away from vagina cleansers.
  7. Always exercise rest and sleep.
  8. Eat a balanced diet.
